The short version

Why an engineer builds small business sites.

A decade of production software teaches you a particular kind of paranoia. Work gets measured before it ships and measured again after. Nothing goes live because it looked fine on the laptop it was built on.

Almost no small business website is held to that standard. It gets assembled in a builder, it looks right on the one screen it was made on, and nobody ever checks what happens on a five-year-old phone on a weak connection in a car park.

So this is the same work at a smaller scale. Hand-written code, a performance budget, testing on real devices, and one person who is still around six months after launch.

One person can only build so much, so it is worth being straight about where that works well and where it doesn't.

You need several people with their own logins and edit rights
You need it live in a few days rather than a few weeks
